My top song of 2020!
According to Spotify, the song I listened to most in 2020 was:
"Wake up Everybody" by Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes, featuring Teddy Pendergrass.
It took me a while to discover this great song and the late, great Teddy Pendergrass. His story is one of amazing success on the Philadelphia R&B scene ... and tragedy - he suffered a spinal cord injury in a car crash in 1982, leaving him a tetraplegic, paralysed from the chest down. He survived another 28 years and continued composing and performing.
The lyrics are still very relevant today, here is the first verse:
Wake Up Everybody No More Sleepin In Bed
No More Backward Thinkin Time For Thinkin Ahead
The World Has Changed So Very Much
From What It Used To Be So
There Is So Much Hatred War An' Poverty
Wake Up All The Teachers Time To Teach A New Way
Maybe Then They'll Listen To Whatcha Have To Say
Cause They're The Ones Who's Coming Up And The World Is In Their Hands
When You Teach The Children Teach Em The Very Best You Can.
The bit about "teaching a new way" is strangely relevant to the work I am doing!
